In Britain, millions of people watched a program on television about the hungry people in Ethiopia in October 1984. As a consequence, a lot of people felt sad, frustrated and angry. One of those people was pop star Bob Geldof. But when Bob felt sad, frustrated, angry and inspired, he contacted his friend Midge Ure and together they composed a song “Do they know it’s Christmas time?”
After that, things became more important. On July 13th, 1985, 1.6 billion people in over 170 countries watched the legendary Live Aid concert on television – the greatest pop concert in history. Thanks to the cooperation of other pop stars, the Live Aid concert made more than 140 million dollars for the hungry people in Africa.
Then they called other friends and in November, thirty six pop stars – including Sting and Phil Collins – recorded the song. Millions of people bought copies and the song made eight million pounds for the poor in Africa.
That didn’t solve the problem, but it is clear that everybody should support this kind of initiatives in favor of the Third World.
