Sydney Harbour Bridge

Welcome to Sydney!

Let’s start knowing a little bit more about the city that we are going to visit in this project. Our first stop in Sydney is going to be Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge or "Coathanger," as locals always call it, was built in the year 1932 and still remains the world's largest steel arch bridge. Along its length there are two railway lines and eight lanes for road traffic whose direction can be varied according to traffic needs.

Pedestrians can cross the bridge on pavements. To learn about the fascinating history of the bridge's construction, there is a museum in the southeastern pier that can be visited.

At the end of the session, you will have:

  • been introduced to Sydney, one of the largest cities in Australia.
  • known all the outcomes you have to produce in this project.
  • started thinking about which topic you are going to talk about in a podcast that you have to design and record orally.

Watch Sydney - City Video Guide and visit some of the most interesting places Sydney offers to the tourist.

If you need extra help, you can turn on subtitles. Which place would you like to visit first? Which one has impressed you the most? Have you ever watched the New Year's Eve fireworks on TV that take place every year at this bridge?

After having watched the video, try to answer the following questions orally:

  • Do you know any other famous places in Sydney?
  • Have you ever been to Sydney? And to any other Australian cities? Do you know of anybody who has visited this city or any other Australian cities?
  • Would you like to visit this city in the future? Why? Why not?

If you want to know more details about the largest Australian city and the top 10 things you need to know about Sydney, watch the following video:

As you can see, Will shows us some of the very interesting places to visit and things to do in those places and it is a good way to get acquainted with the city you are going to work with on this project. What aspect has surprised you the most? Is there anything that you already knew about this city? Have you chosen your favourite place in Sydney yet? or the place you want to know more about?

You can answer and summarize these questions in a short monologue and you can share it with your classmate or with the rest of the class.

As you are going to see in a few moments, Sydney Harbour Bridge will be the first place you should include on a Google Site map route. Don't forget about it!

Meanwhile, visit its official website and get to know all the different steps of its construction and its history.

Outcomes to produce while in Sydney.

At the end of this project, you will have produced the following outcomes:

Task: Each project has a completely different task, with different steps in order to complete it. In Sydney, you will have to produce, individually, the script of a podcast that you will have to record using the tool PodOmatic about a topic that you have to choose about your interests: a hobby, your favourite group, actor / actress, etc. You will have to not only design the text you will have to record, but any other details about your main interest that you will have to add.

Finally, you will have to present it in your classroom and you will also have to disseminate it through Twitter. All the steps within this task will be identified thanks to their colour, orange.

Challenge: Along the different projects, there is a challenge which is common to all the projects, with a Google Site, where you have to search for certain information of the different English-speaking cities you are going to visit.

The different activities are also going to be distributed in different steps and you are going to have some help to look for and select the information for the collaborative challenge. This is designed to be done in groups of 2/3 students. All the activities within this challenge will be identified thanks to their colour, green.

If you need extra help with how to manage a site, check how to manage a Google site.

Learning Diary: You have to use a blog (wordpress, blogger, edublogs or others), as your learning diary. You will publish the different reflections on the activities you will find throughout the project, the videos of the conversations with your classmates, the reflections on the daily work, all the different tasks, the link to your Google Site challenge, and all the other activities that you will be discovering along the projects. All the activities within this task will be identified by their colour, blue.

If you need extra help with how to start a blog, check how to start a blog.

Twitter will be a tool you should use to spread and share your work. Along the project you will be required to publish on Twitter using one (or both) of these hashtags: #taskpodcast and #EDIAsydney The 'Rubric to assess a Tweet' can help you do a good job in this social network.

If you are new to this social network, take a look at this link for new users.

All your work along this unit will be evaluated according to the following rubric. You can use it as a guide and a reference for your work: 'Assessment rubric: Sydney'

Your task: A podcast about a topic of your interest

Task Step 1: Think and choose about what you have to talk about in your podcast.

At the end of this project, you will have been able to design and record a podcast about a topic of your interest, whether it is a sport you practise, a rock band you follow, an actor or an actress whose films you love or something you like to read and investigate about. Then, using the application PodOmatic,  you will have to record it and share to the rest of your classmates

By doing so, you will be awarded an accomplishment badge by your teacher who will be able to create them with this website and that you will be able to upload to your personal Learning Diary.

First you have to choose the topic you are going to focus on. Then, you have to think about what to include in your podcast and brainstorm some answers to these questions:

  • Which interest am I going to develop with the podcast? What do I already know about that topic?
  • What would I like to investigate about? How much do I already know about the topic I would like to record the podcast? What part is the most unknown for me?
  • What aspects I am going to focus on to make the podcast interesting for the audience? What is the most unknown for everybody about my topic? Feel free to add as many other issues that you consider interesting for your research in this project.

Have you already started thinking about what to include in your podcast? Which topic are you going to talk about? If you need a little help with this topic, get some ideas reading How to make a successful podcast.

This could be a great moment to start with your work on Twitter. Make your first posts summarizing the project and introducing the topic you are going to deal with in your podcast in this project using the hashtag: #EDIAsydney and #taskpodcast. The 'Rubric to assess a Tweet' can help you do a good job in this social network.

Let's continue with our visit to Sydney!
