Sydney Opera House

I'm sure you have seen this building thousands of times on TV

It is one of the best known world's icons, the Sydney Opera House is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most famous attraction on the harbour. This building, which is shaped like shells, is built on a finger of land surrounded by water.

If you visit it, you can take some pictures, have some relax at one of the restaurants or take an organized tour of this wonderful building, which has got theatres, studios, exhibition rooms, a concert hall and a cinema.

The visitor can book a Sydney Opera House Guided Walking Tour to learn about the history of this famous building. People who buy that ticket can join any of the tours throughout the day until 5 pm every day.

At the end of the session, you will have:

  • read and answered some questions about the Sydney Opera House.
  • started doing some research on your Google Site project.
  • opened your Learning Diary and started writing your first post of this Project.

Would you like to know more about this opera house? What kind of show would you like to attend? A theatre play or a concert? How much would you pay for a ticket for the opera? As you can buy tickets for so many different shows at the Opera House, you will have to visit its official website, obtain certain information about and answer these questions:

  • Transport: Where can you catch buses, trains and ferries near Sydney Opera House?
  • Tour: If four families went on the tour, how much would they have to pay to get in?
  • Sydney Opera House History: Who designed and created the Sydney Opera House? What else can you find about the creator?
  • World Heritage: When was Sydney Opera House included in the UNESCO World Heritage List?
  • Sydney Opera House Insiders: How much do you save at the car park if you have an Opera House membership?

Remember that the Sydney Opera House must be part of the route at your Google Sites map.

Continue with your posts on Twitter. Visit its Flickr Channel and choose the picture from the construction of the Opera House that impresses you the most and tweet about it using the hashtags #taskpodcast and #EDIAsydney. The 'Rubric to assess a Tweet' can help you do a good job in this social network.

The Commonwealth was founded in 1926

As you may probably know, Australia is also one of the fifty-four member states that belong to the Commonwealth of Nations.

Visit the Commonwealth of Nations official website and choose one of the member state from the list. Each of you has to choose one of the member states and select a couple of things that you consider interesting about it.

Send a tweet with the link of the page of the member state you have chosen and to the post of your learning diary where you have written some of the most significant aspects of that country: when it became a member of the commonwealth, when it became an independent country, how long it has been competing in the Commonwealth Games and the number of medals, etc. Remember to use the project hashtags.

The Commonwealth Games is a multinational and multi-sport event. It is held every four years in different cities that belong to the Commonwealth of Nations it and it involves their elite athletes. Attendance at the Commonwealth Games is typically around 5,000 athletes more or less.

As a result of this activity, you have to create a list with all the Commonwealth member states you have worked with. You have to upload this list to your personal blog.

In order to create the list of the Commonwealth countries, you can use the following online tools:

Use the links of your posts from your learning diaries. When you finish, you can share your link through Twitter using the hashtags of this project: #taskpodcast and #EDIAsydney The 'Rubric to assess a Tweet' can help you do a good job in this social network.

Your challenge: Sydney, here we go!

Challenge Step 2: Getting to know what is required and starting with the research

At this stage, once you have set up your teams and created your Google Site, you have to continue with the entry of one of the most famous cities in Australia, Sydney, for the English-speaking cities challenge.

The city of Sydney is the capital city of the New South Wales State. Even though Sydney is a very important city, the capital city of Australia is Canberra. New South Wales is one of the federated states and territories that Australia is composed of.

As you have seen in this section, Australia (officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia) is a federation of six states, together with ten federal territories. The Australian mainland consists of five of the six federated states—the state of Tasmania is an island near the mainland—and three of the federal territories. Each one of them has its own flag and its own capital city.

The minimum requirements that your group has to fulfill in order to pass this challenge successfully include:

  • the map of the city from Google Maps with the route of the ten stops we have in our tour of the city.
  • one video about tourism in the city,
  • some text about what tourists can do in the city,
  • And two links to printable guides, leaflets, brochures, and so forth.

In order to complete the challenge, you are suggested to look up the some websites:

These are the suggested websites where you can obtain a lot of information for your challenge. But you can do your research with any other interesting websites about this city and country.

In order to produce the best possible design for this challenge, you have to take into account the following rubric: 'Rubric for assessing the design of a digital site'.

Learning Diary

Learning Diary. Step 1: Start your blog-portfolio and use it to reflect on the different activities you are working on.

One of the activities you have to do is a "Learning Diary". You can do it by opening a blog where you can explain in your first post different aspects of your research such as:

  • How you have divided the different tasks and the research you have done.
  • All the steps you have followed so far in your investigation.
  • The links you have already visited in your challenge.

If you have already opened up a blog in another project, just add these reflections in another page. Remember that creativity is going to be really important in developing the project.
